Japanese action fantasy adventure, “Yu Yu Hakusho”, hit #1 on Netflix’s latest global non-English top 10, drawing 32.1 million hours viewed (7.7 million views) in its first six days on the platform.
The five-episode series, developed by Akira Morii and Kaata Sakamoto for Netflix, premiered on 14 December, breaking new visual effects ground for the global streamer.
The series budget has not been disclosed.
The TV show is based on Yoshihiro Togashi’s “Yu Yu Hakusho” (Shueisha Jump Comics), the story of teen delinquent Yusuke Urameshi (played by Takumi Kitamura), in whose hands the fate of the human world lands after he dies in an accident.
“Yu Yu Hakusho” pushed Korean favourite “My Demon” into second place with 4.2 million views in its fourth week on the top 10 (week of 11-17 Dec 2023).
The third season of JTBC’s Korean reality/dating show, “Single’s Inferno”, placed fourth with 3.6 million views in its first week on the top 10.
The other two Asian titles on the list are Studio N/Bon Factory Worldwide’s Korean comedy, “True Beauty”, at #6 with 63.5 million hours (3.2 million views); and JTBC/SLL’s “Welcome to Samdal-ri” at #10 with 11 million hours and 1.9 million views.
“Yu Yu Hakusho” is adapted from the 1990–94 manga series by Yoshihiro Togashi.
“Yu Yu Hakusho” took five years to make – two years in development/pre production, about 10 months to shoot, and two years in post production.
The series is produced by Robot in association with Japanese broadcaster TBS’ independent production division, The Seven.
