Asian streamer Viu premieres eight Viu originals in the second quarter of this year – including JTBC’s much-anticipated new original, “Reborn Rich” – amid brutal jostling for Korean drama titles and increasing focus on Southeast Asia by global platforms.
“The market has attracted a lot more global players who are coming into Asia; for us growth has been in our 16 home markets,” Janice Lee, Viu CEO/PCCW Media Group MD, told delegates at the APOS event in Singapore this morning.
Talking about platform expansion, Lee said “we don’t want to spread ourselves too thin… We still see a tremendous amount of growth in the markets that we are in”.
“We are still scratching the surface. Our growth has been the tier one cities. We have set our sights on venturing beyond,” she said, highlighting Viu’s ongoing focus on relevant and localised Asian content.
Five of Viu’s eight Q4 titles will stream in October, and two in November, Viu said today.
Viu’s premiere date for“Reborn Rich”, based on a Korean web novel, has not been disclosed.
“Reborn Rich” premieres on JTBC’s Saturday/Sunday prime-time slots in Korea on 19 November and runs until 8 January 2023.
The streamer has exclusive global rights (excluding Korea/China) to the series, which stars Song Joong-ki (“Descendants of the Sun”) as a man who wakes up in the body of a son of the powerful company that abandoned him in a previous incarnation.
Viu’s Q4 new drama slate kicks off on 7 October with “#lovesignal”, its first Hong Kong original, followed on 10 October by Thai drama “Real Fake”; and Malaysian romcom “Ijab Kabut” (“I Have A Plan”) starring Fadlan Hazim and Azira Shafinaz in the story of a woman whose life falls apart when her fiance pulls out of their wedding at the 11th hour (13 October).
Indonesian Wattpad-based series, “Bad Boys VS Crazy Girls”, directed by Josephine Lidwani Winardi and Emil Heradi, and “K-Love” follow on 14 October.
The two November titles are Thai romance “Finding the Rainbow”, which Viu announced in January this year; and “Hilang” (17 November). “Finding the Rainbow”, p...
