The Vietnamese version of Chinese platform Mango TV’s singing reality show, "Sisters Who Make Waves" (aka "Ride the Wind"), is gathering millions of views on social media, including TikTok and YouTube.
The series premiered at the end of October on state-owned free-TV broadcast network, VTV3, in a prime time Saturday night slot as "Chị đẹp đạp gió rẽ sóng" ("Beautiful Sisters Riding Waves").
Episode four, which premiered this past weekend, was watched 1.3 million times in less than 48 hours on the official Yeah1 YouTube channel.
Thirty female artists older than 30 and already well known are participating in the first Vietnamese version.
Viewers vote to choose seven female artists to form a new female singing group.
The Vietnam version is hosted by Anh Tuan, actor Quoc Truong and model Lam Bao Chau.
The Chinese original premiered in 2020. Season four aired this year, and was won by 42-year-old Taiwanese singer-actress, Ella Chen, from S.H.E.
According to China’s Global Times, the series has attracted 33 sponsors, which is a record for a reality show in Vietnam.
Vietnam’s formats market is running second in after India for this year so far, according to ContentAsia’s rolling Formats Outlook.
As of end September, India had 29 titles, Vietnam had 23 titles and Thailand was in third place with 17 titles.
Singing-based titles, game shows and drama series topped Asia’s formats in Asia in the first half of this year, accounting for 64% titles from Jan-June 2023.
Singing formats continue to thrive in Vietnam, with six titles in the first half of this year.
These included two versions of Banijay Rights’ "Your Face Sounds Familiar". "Your Face Sounds Familiar" S9 premiered in October this year.
