China’s state-owned Wasu Group has picked up rights to more than 1,000 hours of library content in a three-year volume deal announced this afternoon with Singapore’s Mediacorp.
The licensing agreement for Chinese-language drama and lifestyle programming is Mediacorp’s biggest-ever catalogue arrangement in China and its first with the Hangzhou-based digital service provider.
The agreement delivers 800 hours of content to kick off the deal, with 100 hours of fresh content a year for the following two years.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed but Wasu new media director, Song Su, talked about “creative collaboration” and “a win-win deal” that was the “beginning of new opportunities for growth in both markets in the future”.
This may imply some element of revenue share.
Wasu will offer the titles to its more than 100 million subscribers in 100 cities across mainland China via a dedicated Mediacorp section.
Initial titles on the platform include heartland dramas “Mightiest Mother-in-law” (最强岳母), “My One in a Million”(我的万里挑一) and “Say Cheese” (西瓜甜不甜), as well as medical drama “You Can Be An Angel”(你也可以是天使) and time-travel thriller “Blessings” (祖先保佑).
