Korean broadcasters went on a scripted format charm offensive at the ATF this afternoon, showcasing a handful of dramas – mostly romcoms – they chose as prime adaptation properties for programmers in Asia.
KBS Media's Jung Min Park talked about romcom “Dali & Cocky Prince”, about an ignorant creditor and a book smart debtor. The 16-episode series, with Park Gu-young and Kim Min-jae in the lead roles, aired in Korea on Wed/Thurs nights from Sept to Nov this year.
Broadcast rival MBC is betting on 2015 romcom “She Was Pretty” from a heyday when Wed/Thurs prime time drama could still attract a share of almost 20%. “She was Pretty” has already sold to six markets: ATV in Turkey (2015), China (2016), Vietnam (2019), Japan (2021), Thailand (2021) and Malaysia (2021).
The country’s third major terrestrial network, SBS, rolled out romcom action series, “One the Woman”, which peaked at a share of 20.6% during its run from Sept this year in a Fri/Sat prime-time slot. The 16-episode series is about a corrupt prosecutor (played by Lee Ha-nee) who loses her memory and switches lives with a modest daughter in law of a rich family who happens to look like her.
JTBC’s choice was romcom “She Would Never Know” (16x70 mins), an office romance between a chic female senior and a hot rookie employee. The show, which aired in the Mon/Tues drama slot from Jan to March this year, pretty much died in Korea; the highest average audience share for an episode was 2.427%.
The outsider for the afternoon was Yoon&Company's latest short-form web drama, “Bubble Up” (10x12 mins). The coming-of-age story is about a 19-year-old girl (played by K-pop star Kim So Hee from Nature) who chooses work over college.
