Singapore's Robot Playground Media and Malaysia's The R&D Studio debuted their seven-part animated anthology series, "Spectrum", today with Ervin Han's short film "Daisies and Sparrows" exclusively on streaming platform Viddsee.
The other six films will be released once a month from Jan to June 2021.
Supported by Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Malaysia's Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the anthology explores themes of family, relationship and social issues on both sides of the Causeway.
In addition to Han, the Singapore writer/directors involved are Morrie Tan, who wrote and directed "The Visit", a stop-motion film that explores a young girl’s relationship with her incarcerated father; Chai Yee Wei, writer and director of "Grandma Comes Home", about a boy who, struggling with the passing of his beloved grandmother, is given one final chance to meet her again; Wendy Li and Jessica Nathania who co-directed "Old Man and the Cat" about a grumpy recluse who forms an unlikely bond with a stray cat.
The four Malaysian writers/directors are Mclelan, who presents "Framed Memories" about an old father who tries to reconnect with his estranged son as both grapple with the burden of regret and forgiveness; Irwan Junaidy and Maizura Abas, who co-wrote and co-directed "The Dalang's Tale", about family secrets that veer between light and darkness and touches on the subject of domestic violence; and Han F, who penned and directed the sole comedy in the anthology, "Kulhpocalypse", about culture clash and the unifying love of food.
