Netflix has unveiled its biggest push yet into unscripted originals in Asia, this morning announcing 11 upcoming originals – five for Japan, three for Korea and three for India.
At its first unscripted showcase in the region yesterday, the streamer said that more than 75% of subscribers in the Asia Pacific region had watched unscripted content in 2022.
"We are in the early days of unscripted," Minyoung Kim, Netflix's APAC VP Content, said during the showcase.
The 11 new titles are in addition to two unscripted/factual titles released earlier this month – Indian docu-series “The Hunt for Veerappan” (4 August) and Kakao Entertainment Korean reality show, “Zombieverse” (8 August).
The three new titles out of Korea include the return of hit dating show, "Singles Inferno", for a third season in the fourth quarter of this year. The series is produced by Shirk Company and JTBC.
The other two are "Risque Business: Taiwan", which follows Shin Dong-youp and Sung Si-kyung on a laughter-filled journey to Taiwan, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of its sex culture and business; and "Devil’s Plan", a mind game survival entertainment show that awards up to KRW 500 million to the winner.
Both are scheduled to release this year.
The slate out of Japan includes talk show “Lighthouse” (22 August), featuring musician, actor and author Gen Hoshino and comedian Masayasu Wakabayashi in one-on-one conversations about their worries; and dating show “Is She the Wolf?” (3 September, all episodes ex-Japan) with streaming service Abema and TV Man Union.
"Lighthouse" was developed and produced by Nobuyuki Sakuma, who gave the show its name because the duo's "conversations are able to shine a light on people's worries, even as they themselves continue to grapple with their own darkness".
In a second alliance with Abema/TV Man Union, Netflix premieres Japanese reality dating show “Love Like a K-Drama” on 28 November.

In a second alliance with Abema/TV Man Union, Netflix premieres Japanese reality dating show “Love Like a K-Drama” on 28 November.
The series, executive produced by Netflix Japan’s Dai Ota, focuses on eight male and female actors from Korea and Japan as they live together, and pair up to try and land the lead roles in six mini K-dramas — and see if they fall in love.
New titles out of Japan also include returning seasons of comedy survival talk show, “Last One Standing” (season two releases on 22 Oct 2023) and a second season of dating show “Love Village” (release details not confirmed).
In India, "The Hunt for Veerappan” will be followed by season three of Dharmatic Entertainment's "Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives"; Sikhya Entertainment's documentary "Yo Yo Honey Singh", which follows Indian musician Yo Yo Honey Singh; and Rowdy Pictures' "Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale", showcasing the wedding of Indian superstar Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan.
Release dates for the new Indian originals have not been confirmed.
Two days after its release, “The Hunt for Veerappan” was Netflix’s top show in India (week of 31 July to 6 August). The Awedacious Originals series is about India’s costliest manhunt.
