Netflix has come under official scrutiny in Korea, this time for allegedly violating regulations on providing specific details of who to contact for customer data protection info.
Korean rules mandate a name or division and a contact number.
A report in local daily, the Korea Times, says Netflix’s Korean site only provides an email address, which falls short of the official requirement.
Netflix said in a statement that it complies with all applicable local laws, and directs queries about its privacy policies to its 4,450-word online statement explaining its privacy process.
The National Assembly’s ICT and broadcasting committee is investigating. The fine for violations is a little over US$9,000 (max KRW10 million).
Meanwhile, Korea is considering regulatory amendments that will force ICT companies with sales higher than KRW1 trillion/US$920 million to disclose what resources they are dedicating to protecting customer data.
The data protection story is playing out against a fierce push by Korea’s domestic players to halt Netflix’s progress on their home territory.
