
Mediacorp’s biggest prime-time drama series “Emerald Hill” has beaten regional favourite – Korea’s “When Life Gives You Tangerines” – to #1 spot in Singapore on Netflix’s weekly rankings for the week of 10-16 March.
The win breaks a clean sweep for the Korean blockbuster across five Southeast Asia markets plus Hong Kong and Taiwan for the week.
“When Life Gives You Tangerines” topped rankings in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.
In addition to Singapore and Korea, viewers in India and Japan gave local titles their vote.
The top show in India for the week was Hindi crime drama “Dabba Cartel”, with “When Life Gives You Tangerines” at #2. “Dabba Cartel” has taken the top spot in India for three weeks.
In Japan, Nippon TV’s show of the moment, “The Hot Spot”, regained its #1 spot for the week, rising from its #2 spot in the previous three weeks; the show was #1 for two weeks in February (3-16 Feb). “When Life Gives You Tangerines” ranked #7 in Japan.
In Korea, local titles have been #1 every week since the beginning of the year – the only country in Asia, including India, where Netflix’s top title of the week has been local. “When Life Gives You Tangerines” has been #1 in Korea for the past two weeks.
“Emerald Hill” (aka “Emerald Hill: The Little Nyonya Story”) is a spinoff of Mediacorp’s blockbuster 2008 production, “The Little Nyonya”. The 30-episode series focuses on the lives of three Nyonya women in a prominent matriarchal family. Although the production budget has not been disclosed, the new series is thought to be Mediacorp’s largest to date.
“Dabba Cartel”, directed by Hitesh Bhatia and produced under Excel Entertainment, is about five middle-class women in a Mumbai suburb whose lunchbox delivery service takes an unexpected turn. The series placed #9 on Netflix’s global non-English TV top 10 for the week of 10-16 March.
Directed by Itaru Mizuno (“Rebooting”) for Nippon TV, “The Hot Spot” is about a 41-year-old single mother working at a hotel near Mount Fuji whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets an extraterrestrial being.
