Malaysian filmmaker Amanda Nell Eu will be awarded the 2024 Women In Motion Emerging Talent Award for her debut feature film ”Tiger Stripes”.
The award, which will be presented at a dinner in Cannes on 19 May, includes a €50,000 grant to support Eu’s next film project.
The award is supported by luxury brand Kering and the Festival de Cannes.
The “Tiger Stripes” director was selected by 2023 Emerging Talent winner, Swiss director Carmen Jaquier. The year’s promising female director is chosen by the preceding winner.
Talking about her choice, Jaquier said Eu “disrupts the ‘coming of age’ genre and delivers a jubilant, unique film. She reminds me that cinema is a place of invention, of insolence”.
In today’s announcement, Eu said “Tiger Stripes” was a “representation of the freedom that I am talking about and our potential to be beautiful bad-ass creatures in this world, if we can love, accept and listen to each other more”.
Previous winners of the Emerging Talent Awarda include Shannon Murphy (Australia), Ida Panahandeh (Iran) and Eva Trobisch (Germany).
