Two days after its 5 April premiere, Korean sci-fi series, “Parasyte: The Grey”, topped Netflix’s non-English-language TV rankings with 31.5 million hours viewed/6.3 million views.
The series, directed by Yeon Sang-ho ("Hellhound"), premiered on 5 April, pushing last week’s winner, Korean drama “Queen of Tears”, into second place for the week of 1-7 April.
“Parasyte: The Grey” is about a group of humans who wage war against the rising evil posed by aggressive unidentified parasitic life-forms that live off human hosts and strive to grow their power.
The story is based on Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga “Parasyte”, in which parasites take over human brains to control their bodies.
Thee other Asian series appeared on the latest week’s top 10 – “Physical: 100” season two at #4, “The Great Indian Kapil Show” at #5, and “Spy X Family” at #8.
On the English-language TV top 10, Netflix’s adaptation of China’s “3 Body Problem” held onto its top spot for the second consecutive week, albeit with half the number of hours for the week of 1-7 April compared to the previous week.
This is the third week on the global top 10 for the “3 Body Problem”, adapted by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (“Game of Thrones”) and Alexander Woo (“True Blood”) from Cixin Liu’s novels.
The eight-episode series was viewed for 61.3 million hours in the latest week (8.3 million views), down from 115.6 million (15.6 million views) the previous week.
The show, which caused an outcry in mainland China, was on the top 10 list in 92 countries, including the U.S. and the U.K. This is one fewer than the previous week.
“3 Body Problem” is about a group of scientists who join forces with an unorthodox detective after the laws of nature unravel before their eyes.
An opinion piece from the China Military Network said the Netflix series had “roughly transformed the novel's profound thinking into a simple and cliched visual spectacle of ‘good guys beating bad guys’.” (Translated from Chinese).
The article also said the U.S. drive for diversity and inclusion had eliminated Chinese heroes as well as anti-American characters, and accused the series’ creators of “deliberately [retaining] the yellow appearance of the villains”.
