The board of Korean public broadcaster KBS has nominated former Munhwa Ilbo editorial writer, Park Min, as its new president.
Friday’s recommendation during an extraordinary board meeting will now be sent to Korea’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, for confirmation after a National Assembly personnel hearing.
If confirmed, Min will replace Kim Eui-cheol, whose term was supposed to end on 9 December 2024.
In September, the board approved a motion to fire Kim, who was appointed by Korea’s previous administration, after a bitter dispute over public trust, allegations of bias in news coverage and negligence in handling licence fee collection issues and the growing financial deficit.
The final three candidates of the 12 people considered for the role were shortlisted at the end of September.
The three were Choi Jae-hoon (KBS Busan Broadcasting General Bureau reporter), Park Min (Munhwa Ilbo editorial writer), and Lee Young-poong (former KBS new business planning manager).
