Korea’s JTBC Studios is increasing its stake in U.S. indie producer, Wiip, stepping up long-held international production ambitions.
Financial terms of the new investment have not been disclosed.
JTBC Studios said today that it had started investing in Wiip in the first half of last year.
JTBC joins CAA (Creative Artists Agency) as an investor in Wiip, and said today it anticipated a “cooperative relationship after the acquisition”.
Wiip was founded in 2018 by former ABC Network/Studio president, Paul Lee.
The production house is best known for its involvement in “Dickinson” for AppleTV+, and “Mare of Easttown” for HBO Max.
JTBC said more than 100 projects were in planning and development stages, and it expected that “Wiip will increase its influence in the Asian market through JTBC Studio”.
“JTBC Studio plans to expand the scope of global studios to Japan and Southeast Asia in the future based on this full-fledged entry into the U.S. market,” the company said.
JTBC has for years harboured international ambitions, inking its first co-development deal in 2017 with Endemol Shine Group.
