Sujoy Ghosh’s Hindi mystery thriller, "Jaane Jaan", became Netflix’s top non-English-language film in the world three days after its release, giving Netflix’s India content head, Monica Shergill, yet another win in the streamer’s fastest growing market in the world.
The film, which runs for two hours and 19 minutes, was viewed for 18.8 million hours (8.1 million views) from its premiere on 21 September to the week’s closing on 24 September.
Making the top 10 films list in 52 countries for the week, "Jaane Jaan" was #1 in 12 countries, overwhelmingly in Asia, according to Netflix data.
"Jaane Jaan" was one of three Indian-language titles – two Hindi and one Telugu – on the top 10 list for the week. This put Indian-language films on par with Spanish-language features from Spain, Chile and Mexico.
With Japanese fantasy, Yuichi Fukudas’ "Once Upon a Crime", Asian titles dominated the week’s top 10 with four spots.
The other two were Hindi crime action film, "Bhola Shankar", which placed eighth (2.3 million hours viewed/900,000 views) in its first week on the list; and director Meher Ramesh’s Telugu version of the same film, which followed closely in ninth spot in its second week on the top 10. The film is about a man who hunts down the thugs who harmed his sister.
"Jaane Jaan" came in with more than three times the number of hours viewed than its closest competitor, Danish comedy, "Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction", which was viewed for six million hours (3.8 million views) during the week of 18-24 September.
"Jaane Jaan" stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma in the film adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s novel, Devotion of Suspect X, which director Ghosh described as “the love of my life for a long long time”.
Ahead of "Jaane Jaan’s" release, Shergill said the feature bore witness to the lengths someone would go for love.
