iQiyi has added its first two Philippines originals to its slate in an alliance with one-time domestic broadcast giant, ABS-CBN, the Chinese streamer said today during the opening of the Asian Contents and Film Market in Busan.
Four Korean original productions, along with four exclusive titles from Thailand and Malaysia, are also on the new slate unveiled today.
iQiyi’s vice president of international business, Kuek Yu-Chuang, said the platform was doubling down on its investment in Asian content for its global platform, but gave no investment details.
He said Korean drama made up 38% of iQiyi’s total drama watch time in 2020. This prompted the platform to ramp up Korean titles by 30% this year.
The two Philippines productions – ”Saying Goodbye” and “Hello, Heart” – are iQiyi’s first from a specific market in Southeast Asia.
Previous series, “The Ferryman: Legends of Nanyang”, was its first regional original for Southeast Asia.
Both Philippines’ titles premiere worldwide later this year.
Andrea Brillantes and Seth Fedelin star in “Saying Goodbye”, about an unlikely pair brought together by their love for music and adventure.
Romcom “Hello, Heart” stars Gigi De Lana as Heart, a beautiful, perky, hard working but very unlucky woman, opposite Gerald Anderson as Saul, the emotionless, business-as-usual man who hires her to pretend to be his wife to please his grandmother, who has dementia.
The new Korean titles headed for iQiyi in 2022 include “Crazy Love”, about a genius maths tutoring center CEO (played by Kim Jae Wook) who receives a death threat and tries to seek out the murderer by pretending to suffer memory loss. Krystal Jung plays his introverted secretary. The show is directed by Kim Jung Hyun (“Awaken”), and produced with Story Hunter Productions.
The other three new Korean series are “Us At One Point”, produced by GTist, a tragic love story centered on reincarnations and a couple trying to save each other from a curse; “My Oppa Is An Idol” with Studio N, about a fussy entertainment agency rep, a famous idol, and a loyal fan living under the same roof; and romcom “Weekday Wife” about a woman groomed as a rich heiress who rejec...

From Malaysia comes exclusive Malaysia/Singapore rights to police action procedural, “Gerak Khas Undercover”; and “Cukup Derita Itu Part 2”, about non-identical twins raised by their aunt.
