Taipei-based global streaming platform, GagaOOlala, has premiered Taiwan's first queer queer reality dating TV show, “Boys Like Boys”, across Asia in a staged rollout that started in Taiwan at the weekend and expands to Japan this coming weekend.
Produced by GagaOOlala and sister platform HahaTai, the 10-episode show takes a group of men on a six-day journey in search of love.
Executive producer and GagaOOLala founder, Jay Lin, said today that “Boys Like Boys” “holds significant importance for LGBTQ+ content, symbolising how LGBTQ+ content has evolved from scripted, sorrowful tales of homophobia and coming out to celebrating freedom, equality, and the pursuit of love and happiness”.
Lin emphasised that the main focus of this show was the story of a group of individuals “who happen to be queer seeking love”.
“Boys Like Boys” was produced in Mandarin and is subtitled in traditional & Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, Thai, Bahasa Indonesia and Spanish.
In addition to streaming globally on GagaOOlala, the series streams on Chinese operator Tencent Video’s WeTV platform in Thailand and the Philippines, as well as on Rakuten and Video Market in Japan from 21 October.
Regional streamer Viu will stream the show in Thailand and the Philippines; the date has not been confirmed.
GagaOOLala has made the first episode available on YouTube as well.
The platform said this morning that episode one on Saturday (14 October) had attracted more than 350,000 views in its first 24 hours.
Cast from more than 1,000 applicants, “Boys Like Boys” was directed by Fox Huang, who said today that "participants were meticulously selected to represent diverse cross-sections of society, spanning professions, ages, and personalities. Our goal is to provide a platform where anyone, regardless of their appearance, orientation, character, or occupation, can experience the joys of love”.
