Singapore news channel, CNA, premieres home-grown business reality show "The Big Spark" on Friday night (2 Feb), bringing to a close a three-month promotional campaign supporting the initiative to unearth Southeast Asia's next big idea.
Announced in November during the Singapore Fintech Festival, "The Big Spark" promises to "discover the companies of tomorrow... the dreamers, innovators and visionaries who are sparking change and shaping the world with the power of their ideas".
The show was created by Mediacorp’s chief content officer, Virginia Lim, with U.K. formats veteran, Jonathan Glazier ("Asia's Got Talent"), for Mediacorp's dedicated news channel, CNA.
Glazier is executive producer and director.
The eight-episode series involves 24 start-up teams from across Southeast Asia, who pitch their ideas for up to S$1 million in seed funding.
Glazier describes the series as "very much in the new breed of reality show. Rather than being about conflict and drama, it’s about supportive communities; a series for good, if you will."
He said the aim was to "reflect the reality of the entrepreneurial journey, to support and to inspire.”
Judges are Roshni Mahtani Cheung, founder & group CEO of The Parentinc, and Lim Wai Mun, founder & CEO of health & wellness company Doctor Anywhere, along with guest judges for every episode.
Guest judges include Amit Gupta, president SG & Global Trustee, TiE and founder, Ecosystm Group; Eric Lian, head of group commercial banking, UOB; Mustafa Kapasi, chief commercial officer, M1; and Rebecca Martin, head of Strategy, Elevandi, among others.
At the launch in November 2023, Mediacorp said the show "aims to be a platform to cement Singapore’s position as a launchpad for innovation and entrepreneurship" and used its wide reach and multiple platforms "to support the region’s start-up culture, connecting key players across the ecosystem to nurture promising enterprise".
