Prime Video’s head of Thai content, Darin Darakananda, emphasised the importance of experimentation, especially in the early days of building a domestic content slate.
Speaking at the ContentAsia Summit in Bangkok today, she said: “We want to come in with open eyes and say that we don't have the data to say whether this is going to work or not work, but let's be brave enough to try something”.
Prime Video’s first Thai local original, “Comedy Island Thailand”, premieres on 31 August across the streamer’s global footprint.
Weaving scripted and unscripted elements, the six-part series launches with three episodes streaming back-to-back each Thursday over two weeks.
Directed by Krisada Kanivichaporn (“Midnight University"), “Comedy Island Thailand” follows six actors – Chutavuth Pattarakampol, Pongsatorn Jongwilas, Kanticha Chumma, Rusameekae Fagerlund, Pattarasaya Kruasuwansiri, and Chalermpol Thikampornteerawong – who are abducted by two scientists to a mysterious island.
Two other versions of the Japanese format – “Comedy Island Philippines” and “Comedy Island Indonesia” – were filmed back-to-back in Phuket.
Philippines premieres on 31 August and Indonesia later this year.
The creative director on “Comedy Island Thailand” is Mez Tharatorn, who has helmed several Thai rom-coms.
“Comedy Island Thailand” is produced by Liminal Entertainment in conjunction with Malin Films Production.
The show is executive produced by Jef Lim, Marilyn Tan and Malin Pongsapipatt.
