BBC/ITV-owned British SVOD platform, BritBox, has commissioned a three-episode prime-time crime series based on the Inspector Singh Investigates novels written by Singapore-based author, Shamini Flint.
The TV series, directed by Suri Krishnamma (Coronation Street), stars Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars at No. 42) in the lead as the unorthodox Inspector investigating crimes in different Asian cities.
Episodes are scripted by Paul Logue (Midsomer Murders).
Production is scheduled to begin in Malaysia in January 2023 led by 108 Media’s U.K. production entity using the company’s APAC financing and production facilities, including Zainir Aminullah’s Revolution Media in Kuala Lumpur.
The Inspector Singh deal was announced out of London this afternoon.
The three episodes are funded by Britbox for its territories, with 108 Media co-financing/pre-selling for all other markets.
Production budgets for the new series have not been disclosed.
Ballpark budgets for British drama are between £500,000 and £1 million, with not much below that but with an elastic top end. British crime series, Midsomer Murders, for instance, is said to cost upwards of £1.2 million/US$1.4 million (about M$6.4 million) per episode.
The first season of Inspector Singh is set in Kuala Lumpur, where a Singapore model is on death row for murder. Inspector Singh sets out to find the real killer.
Executive producers are Abhi Rastogi, Justin Deimen, David Boulter, Nicky Davies Williams and Sanjeev Bhaskar for 108 Media with BritBox International’s Diederick Santer and Jonathan Karas.
108 Media’s distribution company, DCD Rights, will be leading international sales across non-Britbox territories.
108 Media’s Singapore-based president, Justin Deimen, talked this afternoon about developing regional assets to feed into an international value chain.

“I’m hoping Inspector Singh becomes a case study,” Deimen said shortly after this afternoon’s announcement.
