Thai broadcaster BEC World has reported a 54.2% drop in profit for 2024, with blame laid squarely on the decline in adspend, general economic uncertainty across Thailand, and several one-time expenses.
And there’s little relief in sight for 2025, the company said in its latest earnings report, flagging “another challenging year” as a result of domestic and international issues.
The bright spot is the fledgling movie production business, a partnership with Major Join Film. The JV plans to make two or three movies in 2025. 2024 blockbusters were "Mana Man" and "Death Whisperer 2" (“Tee Yod 2”), which broke box office records with more than THB 800 million/US$24 million. “Tee Yod 2” was the highest-grossing Thai film in 2024.
BEC Group profit for 2024 was THB 96.3 million/US$2.87 million.
One-time expenses blamed for dragging down results included compensation for downsizing and an impairment of assets related to pre-paid actors and script writers.
BEC Group’s revenue across its content licensing business, digital platforms and events/artist management was up 15.4% to THB 796.2 million/US$23.8 million in 2024 compared to 2023.
The company said its domestic ratings and viewership performance remained strong as a result of drama series such as “Dhevaprom", Boys Love (BL) series "To Be Continued", and Girls Love (GL) series "The Secret of Us".
BEC Group's advertising income in 2024 was THB 3,450.0 million/US$103 million, a drop of THB 513.1 million/US$15.3 million or 12.9% from 2023.
Advertising income accounted for 81.1% of the group’s revenue from operations.
