Astro has picked up rights to 33 movies from the iconic Cathay-Keris Malay library from Singapore-based I.E. Entertainment for Malaysia and Brunei, the two companies said today on day two of this year’s ContentAsia Summit.
The 33 movies represent a third of the 91 surviving titles from Singapore's golden age of filmmaking in the 1950s and 1960s. This is the first time in more than a decade that the Malay Movie Classics will air in Malaysia.
The movies include “Pontianak Gua Musang”, “Sumpah Pontianak”, “Jula Juli Bintang Tiga”, “Tunang Pak Dukun”, “Dang Anom”, and “Chuchu Datuk Merah”, which features music composed by Zubir Said, best known as the composer of Singapore's National Anthem.
This is the first major deal for I.E. Entertainment, launched on 8 April 2021 by the Suharjono sisters, Indra and Erlina, with exclusive licensing rights to the Cathay-Keris Films library.
The titles will be made available on Astro Citra and Astro Prima linear channels, including On Demand, Astro Go and OTT platforms from September 2021.
