Karen Appathurai Wiggins, Audible's APAC content VP, is on our Woman to Watch list because... she's leading the drive to develop Asian stories and voices for Amazon's audio platform, Audible, with, among others, home-grown initiatives such as the A$240,000/US$185,000 podcast programme with Australia's Create NSW and Screen NSW, and a podcast accelerator programme launched in Singapore at the end of 2020.
Appathurai Wiggins says she is motivated by "my co-workers... smart, inspiring colleagues who are passionate about creating premium audio content and are customer obsessed".
Here's what else she said in answer to the other two questions we've asked women across Asia's content industry for our latest series:
What would you like people to say about you when you are not in the room?
“She thinks big!” I’m all about ‘blue sky’ creative thinking, I’m not shy to admit. When you find your “tribe” who support you and help bring those ideas to life, you know you have landed in the right place."
Are you now where you thought you would be when you were 20?
"In a way I have sort of come full circle from where I started when I was studying theatre at uni in Australia with a focus on India and Japan. I worked in traditional television and digital production before moving to Audible, a company that’s a unique blend of content and tech. At Audible I have a hand in producing stories that can emotionally connect with our audience by constructing a “theatre of the mind” experience. I’d never have imagined that path, but life has a funny way of working out, doesn’t it?"
ContentAsia's Women to Watch 2021 series asks women from across the industry to talk about what motivates them, what they would like people to say or think about them when they’re not in the room, and whether (or not) they are now where they thought they would be when they were 20. We'll be bringing you what they said every day throughout March.
