A good space
13 June 2014
13 June 2014: Asia's satellite industry is - mostly - in a good space right now. HD migration is in full swing. Digital terrestrial master-plans are playing out. Mobile/broadband and connectivity demands are soaring. As tragic as the circumstances were, disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan have proved yet again that reliable satellites are a critical part of the communications ecosystem.Plus, the cost of launch services is headed down, thanks to SpaceX, which launched its first commercial geostationary satellite in December 2013. As they plan new satellites and services, operators everywhere are looking towards a lower-cost and higher-value future. Further down the line, there's 4K and ultra-HD. Even without a World Cup in full, live, glorious 4K, there's little doubt that the entire industry - from production to playout - ismoving towards sharper definition and better pictures, which is more good news for capacity providers.Of course, the whole pay-TV ecosystem will be in a much better space after the successful launch of Measat-3b in September 2014... even when things are good, a little prayer never hurts.
