Philippines’ free-TV network GMA has reported a 111% improvement in performance last year over 2014, with net income of Ps2.126 billion/US$46 million for 2015.
The Manila-based national network reported consolidated revenues of Ps13.727 billion/US$298 million, up 15% from the previous year’s Ps11.983 billion/US$260 million.
The increase was attributed to the sustained growth in airtime revenues, particularly in regular advertisements across the year, totaling Ps12.381 billion/US$269 million or 16% higher than 2014.
Even without the impact of political advertising, airtime revenues would be up 12%, the network said.
GMA Network chairman and CEO, Felipe Gozon, attributed the performance to multiple factors, but said the results were driven by GMA’s “reclaimed lead in nationwide ratings and continued dominance in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila”.
For full year 2015, GMA says it prevailed over rival networks in National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) with 35.4% household shares versus ABS-CBN’s 34.9% and TV5’s 9.2%, based on Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. Rival network ABS-CBN uses Kantar Media.
GMA’s flagship Channel 7 accounted for the majority of the increase in airtime revenues, registering a 16% improvement over 2014.
GMA News TV climbed 24%, representing the highest sales in the channel’s history, Gozon said. GMA News TV launched in February 2011.
The licensing/syndication business, GMA Worldwide Inc (GWI), exceeded 2014’s sales by 34%, selling 4,003 programming hours across Asia and the rest of the world.
New Media Inc (NMI), the company’s digital unit, saw total advertising revenues up 50% last year compared to 2014.
The network reported a 2% increase in total operating expenses, mostly because of higher spend on production. GMA said this was in line with “constant effort to strengthen content quality on different platforms”.
