Editor's Note: Facts of life
01 April 2015
1 April 2015: Discovery is making headlines in Asia this year - and not just because new U.S. channel programming head Rich Ross is all about dumping the fake, ditching the weird, and going after more than men. Top of mind as the region prepares to welcome two brand new 24-hour factual channels into the fold is who is going to be the change for Discovery Asia after the all-too-honest and very sudden exit of Asia-Pacific president/managing director Arjan Hoekstra in February. Hoekstra lasted just 18 months. Plum job or poison chalice? Depends. But there doesn't seem to be a shortage of people who want the role and who think they can set a badly needed new direction. Or just do something eye catching. Anything. For sure, the facts of life in this space are a lot more complicated than they used to be 20 years ago when all there was in Asia was Discovery Channel, the voice of God, and a whole lot of execs talking about Indonesia's population and $10 a sub in India. Opinions vary widely on what the world needs next from factual programmers, and it definitely includes more drama on screen. What does Asia need? Maybe not so much drama off screen. Fact chance. -JanineContentAsia Factual 2015
